Next Southampton manager: Who will replace Mauricio Pellegrino? All the information you need on next Southampton manager odds

Mauricio Pellegrino is the new manager of Southampton

Mauricio Pellegrino has been hired as the new manager of Southampton following the departure of Claude Puel over the summer but after a fine spell in charge of Alaves, how will the Argentinian boss fare in the Premier League?

Club Status

Founded over 130 years ago on the south coast of Hampshire, Southampton recorded their highest ever league finish in the 1983-84 season with a final rank of second.

After relegation into the Championship in 2005, they returned to the top flight in 2012 and have become an established Premier League team revered for their youth academy, enterprising football and the eye for managerial talent that the board clearly have at their disposal.

Under Nigel Adkins and Mauricio Pochettino, the Saints clawed their way into the top flight and brought through a number of home-grown stars like Luke Shaw.

Pochettino’s desire to move to Tottenham Hotspur prompted the board to target their next Southampton manager – Ronald Koeman – who continued the work of his predecessors and even secured an impressive sixth-place finish.

Koeman, though, was tempted by Everton’s advances. This forced the Southampton board back into the managerial transfer market, but just one year after hiring Claude Puel, they have already parted company with the Frenchman and turned to Mauricio Pellegrino.

The Saints compete at St Mary's, a 32,505 capacity and is a ground that became Southampton's home in 2001 after a two-year construction period. The first match at St Mary's was a 4-3 victory over Espanyol in August, 2001 and, 15 years later it is still home to exciting football.

Southampton have some notable former players including the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Dave Beasant, Alan Shearer, Peter Osgood, James Beattie, Morgan Schneiderlin, Gareth Bale and Matt Le Tissier.

Their current roster includes top talent such as Fraser Forster, James Ward-Prowse, Jose Fonte, Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond.

Southampton have a natural two-pronged rivalry with Portsmouth thanks to the region they both reside in and their maritime histories.

Current Southampton Manager

Mauricio Pellegrino

It might not be difficult to see why Southampton have plumped for Mauricio Pellegrino. Not only does he share the same initials as popular former boss Mauricio Pochettino, he was also an Argentinian international and played as a centre back and spent time both managing and playing in La Liga.

Pellegrino has spent time on the staff with both Valencia and Liverpool following his retirement as a player and after doing a fine job in his home country of Argentina with Independiente, he earned a return to Alaves as manager twelve months ago, the club he ended his playing career with.

Despite pre-season expectations of a low finish following the club's return to La Liga, Pellegrino had a hugely successful season in charge of Babazorros, leading them not only to a top half finish but a Copa Del Rey final before they were eventually beaten by Barcelona at the last hurdle.

Pellegrino has garnered a lot of positive attention during his time with both Independiente and Alaves for his terrific man-management and tactical ability and despite only spending a year with the Spanish club he shared a great affinity with the fans that supporters at St Mary's Stadium will be hoping to replicate this year.

Key Influences - Who helps decide on the manager's future?

The corporate hierarchy consists of Les Reed as director of football, Gareth Rogers as CEO and club owner Katharina Liebherr, but it is Ralph Krueger who forms the relationships with the management and would have a clear say on whether Puel stays or if the board look for the next Southampton manager.
