After the somewhat surprising departure of Thomas Tuchel from the Westfalenstadion at the end of the season, Borussia Dortmund are on the lookout for a new manager ahead of the 2017/2018 campaign.

Club Status

The second most decorated club in German football, Borussia Dortmund are a genuine heavyweight on the European scene and can rightly be considered to be among the biggest clubs in the world when you take into consideration their huge fanbase, impressive stadium and rich history.

Borussia Dortmund possess a massive fan-base spread across many countries in multiple continents, but it's the fans at the Westfalenstadion and in particular those in the 'Yellow Wall' that help make them one of the most instantly recognisable clubs in the world.

The clubs most successful spell came in the mid 1990's as they earned two Bundesliga titles whilst also getting their hands on the Champions League trophy for the one and only time in their history. Recently however they almost emulated this feat, winning the domestic title in 2011 and 2012 before losing out in the UCL final at Wembley to arch rivals Bayern Munich in 2013.

Legendary players such as Michael Zorc, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Lars Ricken helped put the club on the map in the past and in more recent years, players such as Robert Lewandowski, Shinji Kagawa and Mario Gotze have gone on to bigger clubs, although the last two have since returned following ill-fated spells at Manchester United and Bayern Munich respectively.

Nowadays, the Dortmund squad is packed full of terrific world-renowned stars and supremely talented youngsters who ensure the future looks bright in North Rhine-Westphalia. Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are the key men, whilst Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic are the future of the first team.

Dortmund, who are also known as BVB, die Schwarzgelben or die Borussen compete at the Westfalenstadion. Known as Signal Iduna Park for sponsorship reasons, the stadium has an 81,000 capacity for Bundesliga matches and is largest arena in Germany and seventh largest in Europe. Originally opening in 1974, the stadium has since been renovated time and again and has been used as a venue at both the 1974 and 2006 World Cups, as well as the 2001 UEFA Cup Final between Liverpool and Alaves.

Dortmund contest a number of rivalries. The most recent of which has been marketed as Der Klassiker and features the top two teams in Germany, themselves and Bayern Munich. Perhaps fierces however is their local derby against Schalke, known as the Revierderby as they compete for the bragging rights in the Ruhr.

Previous Borussia Dortmund Manager

Thomas Tuchel

It came as something of a surprise to most fans when Thomas Tuchel left Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2016/2017 season, just a matter of days after earning his first and only trophy whilst in charge of the club as BVB overcame Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal Final.

Tuchel had appeared to be doing a steady job at the Westfalenstadion. Although unable to compete with Bayern Muncih, understandably, Dortmund had performed relatively well in Europe over Tuchel's two seasons, won the cup this year and finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in his two seasons in charge.

Like his popular predecessor Jurgen Klopp, Tuchel had arrived at Dortmund following a lengthy and successful spells with FSV Mainz and many were expecting Tuchel to remain with Die Borussen for some time and continue to develop a squad including several talented youngsters.

Towards the end of Tuchel's reign in charge of Dortmund reports emerged suggesting that there was some unrest between the board and the coach and judging from the comments made by CEO Hans-Joachim Watzk and sporting director Michael Zorc, this was the reasoning for the 43 year old's departure.

Ajax head coach Peter Bosz is the current favourite to take over from Tuchel at the Westfalenstadion. The 53 year old has enjoyed just one season at the Amsterdam ArenA since replacing Frank de Boer last summer, but it's been a fine season with de Godenzonen, missing out on the title by one point and reaching the final of the Europa League too.

It seems likely that Dortmund will look to poach a coach from one of Europe's over-achieving sides. They've been strongly linked with Nice's Lucien Favre for example after their terrific season in Ligue 1, but the French club have since issued a statement saying they will not listen to approaches for their popular boss.

Bosz was beaten to the Eredivisie title in Holland this season by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his Feyenoord side, and the former Barcelona and Arsenal defender may be tempted away after so much success in just his second season managing a first-team side. He certainly appears to be a more attractive option than Bosz on paper.

Key Influences - who helps decide on the manager's future?

Borussia Dortmund's CEO is Hans-Joachim Watzk and it was his decision to remove Tuchel from his position following a breakdown in communication between himself and the team's head coach. Sporting director Michael Zorc is a BVB legend from his playing days and also has a say in the club's future along with President Reinhard Rauball.

Potential Future Dortmund Managers and Next Dortmund Manager Betting Advice

It has to be said that there appears to be three frontrunners for the Borussia Dortmund job and it would be considered something of a surprise if the job went to somebody other than Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Peter Bosz or Lucien Favre.

At one point, a deal for Favre to leave OGC Nice for North West Rhinephalia appeared all but done until a statement from the French club said that they were not prepared to listen to any approaches for their head coach, and as such Favre's odds have lengthened somewhat.

That leaves the two Dutch bosses looking like the favourites for the job. After securing Feyenoord's first Eredivisie title in 18 years, Van Bronckhorst would perhaps be the more popular choice although Bosz seems the more likely at this stage to replace Tuchel in the dugout at Dortmund.
